22 February, 2021 From beginners to professionals in the sector, testimonies of a career path We bring you four testimonies of Emergya colleagues who tell us in first person what this process was like. Starting a working life is not easy. Decisions such as which speciality to opt for or which company to choose are common questions. Added to all this are the expectations of wanting to offer the best of ourselves to prosper and have professional options in the future. We know that the change from university to a job is a fundamental step that often generates doubts and uncertainties. In this sense, having the experience of those who have gone through it before can serve as a guide. Here we bring you four testimonials from Emergya colleagues who tell in the first person how that process was. Laura Albea, Scrum Master "I started as a developer and layout designer at La Drupalera, with people who always supported me a lot, taught me and spoiled me. They also gave me a lot of freedom to decide whether I liked working in frontend or backend. I always felt very supported and accompanied. I have been lucky to have worked almost from the beginning. Both, in the more technical role and with more contact with the client. You can learn a lot on your own, through your own experience, trial and error and by drawing on what you have learned in courses, etc. But nothing compares to working side by side with people who have more experience than you and who tell you what is not written in the books. It is very nice when these people, in addition, show you that you can also contribute. In mentoring, it is very gratifying to see how other people move forward, even proposing new ways of doing things themselves. A fresh point of view is always good. So it's a two-way relationship, not just mentoring on our side and learning on theirs. Working at Emergya, I would highlight the variety of technologies and projects in which you participate. The company allows you to choose in which direction to develop your career. In addition, there are working groups to rely on in order to share knowledge and experiences with the technologies we work with. We maintain this dynamic, even when working remotely. Roge Ramos, Cloud Developer "I got interested in the company because two friends told me that they were quite happy here and that the atmosphere was so good. Therefore, I thought it was worth leaving my internship to try to get my head in here. The beginnings are usually a bit of an uphill struggle, but thanks to my colleagues it went quite smoothly. I was lucky to have a great team with me, and just by being attentive, you learned a lot, and when you asked them questions, I don't even know what to say. I reckon mentoring is the most important thing to progress in any field, but even more so in computer science. You can be excellent on your own and you can be one of those who put in three hours every day after work. But, in the beginning, the biggest steps are taken by learning from the "elders". This feeling and this exchange of knowledge is something that should always be in our job. The more you share, the more you learn. Even if you are the best, there will always be something they can teach you, and even if you are not as experienced, there will always be things you can teach. If the team is united and has an attitude, everyone learns and improves, and that is the key to achieving great teams. In my case, in particular, I am a person who likes challenges. And the fact of changing technologies so many times is quite fun for me. I have been able to do all this thanks to the facilities that Emergya gave me to decide where to go and what change to make in my professional career when it was possible and after demonstrating that I could face it. From what I know about the people in the sector, I could say that 90% of the companies don't have this good atmosphere and this good treatment that we have here. I think it is essential to do things with enthusiasm and without fear. Thanks to the flexibility and the facilities that Emergya provides. Plus the efforts that most of my colleagues make to stick together, I think that choosing Emergya as the company in which to start was a great decision". Estefanía Barrera, Developer "I started with a team that was more like a small family than a team. All the people welcomed me as one of them. And, in this way, everything was much easier. Mentoring was fundamental. And even more so in a sector where you never stop learning and have to update yourself every day. Since I've been at Emergya, I've learned a lot. Everyone helps me to grow, to think, to advance... Working in a team also helps a lot. They provide their knowledge, we help each other and that contributes a lot professionally and personally. The good atmosphere, the companionship and the possibility of growth are points to consider when choosing to come to this company. Emergya was for me the opportunity to grow in all areas and to meet great people, who have contributed and continue to contribute to me day after day". Fran Rodríguez, Backend Developer "We can say that I did not choose Emergya, just the opposite, Emergya chose me. The first months are always tough because you have to get out of your comfort zone. And you have to face such an aggressive field as IT. But thanks to the cool atmosphere at Emergya, starting to deal with new people and changing the work philosophy, everything is easier. Mentoring is the key here because it guides you in your professional career. Also, learning good practices, tools to develop and how to deal with daily problems. To talk about someone in my first steps, I would highlight Nesta Guerrero, who taught me the philosophy of work and, above all, the world of Drupal. You always learn in every project. Although, on a personal level, when you are responsible for a project that you have to analyze, create tasks and have people in charge of you is when you mature. All this allows you to see the development from another approach and grow. In my case, when I have had to mentor, you realize that it is a huge responsibility. This process is comparable to raising a child. Because they think that this is their first work experience and if you don't help them to adapt and teach them how to solve the problems they will encounter, they can become overwhelmed or have a bad experience and leave the company or even the IT sector. Therefore, I try to "pamper" them so that they feel at ease and teach them everything I have learned so that they go faster and without fear. Emergya offers a healthy environment where you feel good and that is very valuable. And if you are interested, you can change technology to discover new horizons. These values and the philosophy of the company help you in your personal advancement. Also, the comfort you feel, the 'good vibes' you will find and the support of those around you help a lot”.
